Kattupakkam, Porur and the western suburbs: shooting on location in west Chennai

The studio is in Kattupakkam, which shapes where we shoot. Notes on light, access and traffic across the western suburbs.

Our studio is in Kattupakkam, near the metro station, and that shapes the work more than it might seem.

Why location matters to a session

Travelling across Chennai with a newborn, or with a toddler mid-nap, is its own ordeal. Families in the western suburbs regularly tell us they had considered a studio in Adyar or T. Nagar and abandoned the idea after estimating the journey with a car seat and a feeding schedule.

For a studio session that is the main consideration. For on-location work it changes what is practical.

The areas we work in most

Kattupakkam, Porur, Poonamallee, Iyyappanthangal, Mangadu, Ramapuram, Valasaravakkam, Maduravoyal and out towards Ambattur and Avadi. Close enough that an at-home session does not become a half-day expedition for the crew, which keeps it affordable and keeps our equipment list generous.

At-home sessions out here

Apartments in the western suburbs vary enormously in natural light. A west-facing living room is a gift in the late afternoon; an interior room lit by a single ceiling tube is a very different problem. Send a photograph of the room when you enquire and we will bring the right lighting rather than improvising.

Traffic and timing

The practical constraint on any location session here. Morning sessions before the school run, or mid-morning after it, work far better than anything scheduled around the evening peak. We build the schedule around that rather than pretending it does not exist.

We do travel

Across the rest of Chennai for events and weddings, and further for destination work. But for a baby session, the shortest journey is usually the right one.
