Newborn Photography
Newborn work is the most technically careful photography we do, and the least rushed. The window is roughly the first three weeks, while a baby still curls and sleeps deeply. We keep the studio warm, work in long slow stretches around feeds, and use only settled poses — nothing suspended, nothing propped, nothing composited to look like a baby is holding a position they cannot hold. Sessions run two to four hours because that is how long it honestly takes.

What we would tell you on the first call
Book the window, not the date. Newborns arrive when they arrive, so we hold a slot around your due date and confirm the exact day once you are home. And be sceptical of any newborn portfolio full of babies balanced in improbable positions — a great many of those are two images composited together, and the ones that are not were made by taking a risk with somebody's child. We will not do either. What we will do is sit in a warm room for three hours until your baby is properly asleep.
Newborn — Frequently Asked Questions
When should a newborn shoot happen?+
Between roughly five and twenty-one days. In that window newborns still curl naturally and sleep deeply enough to be posed and moved between setups. After about three weeks babies become more alert and less flexible, which is lovely for everyone except a photographer trying to pose them.
How do I book when I do not know the birth date?+
You book the window, not the date. We hold a slot around your due date and fix the exact day once your baby has arrived and you are home. There is no rebooking fee for this — it is simply how newborn photography has to work.
How long does a newborn session take?+
Two to four hours. Most of that is not photography: it is feeding, settling, warming and waiting. Newborn work that is rushed looks rushed. Bring whatever you need for a long, relaxed morning, and expect to feed at least once during the session.
Are the poses safe? Some newborn photos online look alarming.+
We use settled, supported positions only. We do not attempt suspended poses, and we do not composite two images together to make a baby appear to be holding a position they cannot hold. Many of the more improbable newborn photographs online are composites; some are not, and those were made by taking a genuine risk with a baby. We do neither. A trained handler is present alongside the photographer at every moment of the session.
How warm is the studio?+
We hold it between 26 and 28°C throughout, with a heated posing surface and white noise running. It is uncomfortably warm for adults and correct for a newborn — dress in layers you can remove.
Can siblings and parents be in the photographs?+
Yes, and it is included in the session. We usually photograph siblings early, before a small child has run out of patience, then continue with the newborn once they have gone off to play.
What should we bring?+
Feeding equipment, a change of clothes for the baby, dummies if you use them, and anything sentimental you would like included — a hospital tag, a knitted item from a grandparent, a name plaque. We provide all wraps, bonnets, layers and baskets, sanitised between every session.
What if my baby has jaundice, reflux or a skin condition?+
Tell us before the session and we will plan around it. Mild newborn skin conditions and transient marks are edited gently as a matter of course. For anything that makes lying flat uncomfortable, such as reflux, we adapt the posing and schedule more upright frames — but any question about whether your baby is well enough is one for your doctor rather than for us.
