Valaikappu and seemantham are family events before they are photo opportunities, and they move fast. Our approach is to cover them as documentary work with a handful of directed portraits, rather than stopping the ceremony every few minutes for a set-up. We know the sequence — the bangles, the aarti, the blessings, the feeding — so we are already in position when each moment happens instead of turning around after it.

What we would tell you on the first call
Give us the running order in advance, and tell us which elders must be in the family frames. That single conversation is the difference between a complete set and a gallery where somebody important appears twice in the background. The other thing worth saying: the best images from these events are almost never the posed ones. They are the grandmother's face during the blessing, and they only exist if the photographer is already looking in the right direction.

What does coverage of a Valaikappu or Seemantham include?+
Arrival before guests for décor, jewellery and mandapam details; documentary coverage of the full ritual — the bangles, the aarti, the blessings and the feeding; directed family portraits during the natural break; and a dedicated portrait set of the mother-to-be in her ceremony attire. Two photographers for gatherings above roughly 75 guests.
How far in advance should we book?+
Six to eight weeks is comfortable. These ceremonies cluster around auspicious dates, so several families are often looking for the same weekend — the constraint is usually the date rather than the notice.
Will the photography interrupt the ceremony?+
No. We cover the ritual as documentary work and take portraits in the gaps, rather than pausing proceedings for set-ups. Lighting is kept discreet. The only thing we ask for is the running order in advance, so we are already in position for each moment instead of turning around after it.
How soon do we get the photographs?+
A curated highlight set within 72 hours, so you have something to share while everyone is still talking about it, and the full gallery within three weeks.
Do you cover the ceremony and a separate maternity shoot?+
Yes, and we usually recommend it. Ceremony days are busy and the mother-to-be is the centre of a great deal of activity; a calm studio or outdoor session on a different day produces very different portraits. Booked together they are quoted together.
Do you provide video as well?+
Yes — a photo and video team can cover the event together, with an optional three to five minute highlight film. Book both at once; adding video later usually means a different crew, and it shows.
